Choosing a cleaning company?

Employing people to carry out home maintenance can sometimes feel a bit of a gamble.  Telephone directories and local papers carry hundreds of adverts for businesses and sole traders.  Whilst many carpet cleaners are honest and carry out a good standard of work, and are knowledgeable in their field, there are others who may be genuine, but lack experience and unknowingly have the wrong insurance cover.  It is also important to note that whilst carpet cleaners take out public liability, any separate insurance to cover damage on items worked on is optional.  Both the IICRC and the NCCA request that members submit proof of “Treatment risk” or “Products liability” Cover.

When choosing a carpet cleaner take the following steps to avoid rogue traders:

  • When looking for a carpet cleaner through the phone book or local press look for the logos IICRC or NCCA
  • Trade association logos can only be used by companies who have earned the right to use them
  • Every carpet cleaner should perform pre-tests on the carpet before any cleaning starts to ascertain the Fiber type of the carpet, how the carpet is woven, the type of the backing used and the PH Level.

Remember that is easy for anyone to claim they have the right credentials and insurance, so always ask to see proof. A genuine professional will not be offended and happy to oblige.  It is the home owner’s interest to take these steps to protect their property.
